A Prayer Unto Thee - Hymns to Our Savior
by Kenneth Cope

Guide Rating -   4 Stars
Review by Cindy Siebert

I'm going to begin by saying this review is a little different from the others.  I was not given this album to review specifically for this site.  I bought it myself a few months back at Deseret Book.  I was in the store and it was the background music while I was there.  I loved it so much that I actually asked them what album it was.  I am naturally a shy person so this was quite a big deal for me.  Also, this means the album will have been listened to much more than the previous two were, before they were reviewed.  So, as you read this review I wanted everyone to know where I was coming from on it.

The album consists of 10 hymns or hymn medleys arranged so that they are sung as though speaking directly to the Savior.  Kenneth Cope does all vocals while the orchestrations and arrangements are by Tyler Castleton or Kenneth Cope.  Eight of the songs on the album are hymn medleys.  The other two, "Jesus, The Very thought of Thee" and "In Humility Our Savior" are individual hymns.

First of all, I think a wonderful job was done in combining the different hymns on the 8 medleys.  They each work very well together in expressing the message of the individual song.  For instance, "I Need Thee Every Hour" combines "I Need Thee Every Hour" with "Lead Thou Me On" to truly express how much each of us a need the Savior.  The other 7 songs are combined equally well.  Normally, I am not a big fan of hymn medleys because I love listening and singing all the words of every song.  However, on this album I truly enjoy them.  You won't come away from listening to the album feeling as though you've missed out because the complete hymn was not sung.

Second, I love the idea of singing the hymns directly to the Savior rather than singing about the Savior.  Music can provide us with a wonderful opportunity to express how we truly feel about the Savior and about the Gospel.  I think this is why music is such an important part of Latter-day Saint meetings.  Songs can provide us with the words we need that we would otherwise be unable to express on our own.  These songs truly can be a prayer unto the Savior.

I also love the musical arrangements that accompany each song.  A wonderful variety of instruments is used to provide accompaniment for each song.  The instruments are as varied as a piano, a trumpet, a recorder and a guitar.  The music is very beautiful and very soothing while in no way competing with the words of the hymns.  The song "Sacrament Offerings" provides us with a wonderful chance to hear the quality of the musical accompaniment on this album because one of the hymns is music only.

There are no up tempo songs on this album if that is what you are looking for.  Some people prefer that and it is very understandable.  If you are looking for a wonderful album of hymns to enhance the Spirit in your home on the Sabbath or any day, I highly recommend this album.  Kenneth Cope provided us with a wonderful collection of songs about the Savior when he did "Greater Than Us All" and he has done it again with "A Prayer Unto Thee-Hymns to our Savior"  I give this album 4 stars.  I do not think you will regret spending your money on this album.
