I love the artwork. The illustrations are fairly realistic, but seem to have a dreamy quality about them. The pictures depart somewhat from the traditional Mormon portrayals of Nephite times. (This is good, in my opinion; I don't like my children thinking that people "must" look a certain way. However, I know that some children get upset by things which look "different".) The text does a good job of sticking to the scriptural account (though the story is told from a different perspective). Scriptural references for the text are given on each page. My three-year-old and six-year-old really enjoyed the book. My almost-nine-year -old said it was "okay". When I asked him what he didn't like about it, he said that he already knew the story, so there were no surprises. I guess you can't please everyone! He's right; this is not a thriller. But it is very well written, and may even bring a tear to your eye. I think every family with young children should have this beautiful book in their homes. |
