What do I like about it? First of all, the text comes straight from Joseph Smith's own history. I believe very strongly that children should be exposed to the scriptures at a very young age; though scripture stories are useful tools, I feel that they are only stepping stones to "boost" our children into reading the real thing. This book is great in that it has the "real" text, straight from the scriptures, so children can become familiar with the words. Each page has only one or two verses, so you can generally finish reading before a little one is tired looking of the pictures. The pictures will keep a toddler happy, but the text is serious enough for a much older child. So, overall, I think this is a good family book. My main complaint has to do with the pictures. They look like something from an animated movie. (By animated, I mean something like "Toy Story"-fairly realistic computer animation, rather than a cartoon.) I have nothing against animated movies, but such movies generally have story lines which are completely made up, and my children know it. I do not want them to subconsciously classify the Joseph Smith story with that genre! It's a small complaint, though. I recommend this book for anyone who would like to be able to read the Joseph Smith story to a young child, without being overwhelmed by wiggles. |
