How Were You Converted?

By , About.com GuideJanuary 12, 2010

Follow me on:

Each of us is a convert to the gospel of Jesus Christ, either we were raised as children in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or we were taught the gospel by the missionaries and were baptized. Either way there's usually a process that happens as we become truly converted.

If you were taught the gospel by the missionaries and chose to be baptized, what is your story? How did you know the Church is true? If you were raised in the church what experiences have you had that helped you recognize that you too know the Church is true? Please share your story with us in the comments. (I love hearing people's stories and experiences of spiritual knowledge and growth!)

Lets see, got suckered into joining. It was when I got baptized that I realized I made a major mistake. Everyone kept asking…how do you feel? I felt stupid, and felt absolutely nothing, and really wanted to say it right then.

I just returned from Switzerland with my husband and son. Our “Elder” just finished a two year mission serving the great people of Interlaken and St. Gallen. It was such a joy to shake hands and hug the wonderful ward members there, who put their heart and soul into fellow-shipping and supporting the newly baptized members in there area. I was so impressed with the testimonies and their strength.

I was disgusted with my church. I heard about Mormonism from a friend. I went to the library and got a Book of Mormon and began reading it. I read more on the web and went to the LDS websites. I liked what I was finding. I ordered some materials from the LDS church, and it was hand delivered by missionaries from the local ward. They came at the wrong time… I was on my way out. But I gave them some time, and they gave me more info. I got my first lesson on the phone by a missionary trainee from Utah. I read the indicated scripture Moroni 10:3-5, and did what it said. I received DRAMATIC testimony immediately! Nobody was more surprised than me. I mean… unmistakable. A direct answer to my question. I’ve NEVER received an answer to a prayer before. It was all I needed to be convinced. Since I have begun to live the principles in the BOM my life has changed in ways I never thought possible. I only wish this had happened sooner.

I was a senior student nurse in an 850 bed hospital in Albany NY. I had been searching for a church where I felt comfortable for a while. A missionary got sick and was put in the hospital on the floor where I was assigned, and still being a good missionary, he told me about the Gospel, gave me a Book of Mormon and a reading assignment. He was sent home for health reasons, but 2 other Elders continued teaching me, and long story short, I was baptized 3 months before graduating at age 21 in 1967. Best decision I ever made! Many blessings have come to me since that day.

I had just left my first husband and moved into a room. My neighbour next door took me to Church of England and the one in the room below me took me to the pentecostal Church. Trying to find out which one I should go to so started studying the New Testament when I came across a passage about truth so I asked silently where could I find it?

This was just before Easter. After Easter and LDS girl came to work where I was working and invited me to the LDS Church and after a few weeks I was baptised. However I bore my testamony before I was baptised as to the truthfulness of the Church.

He has worked in my life several ways since then and in 1993 I met a man thru a mutual interest and immediately felt he was looking for something so I gave him the Book of Mormon and later sent round the missionaries. He rejected them at first but a couple of months later he moved to the other side of the country to be with me and received the discussions in full. We have now been married and sealed in the temple. It was no secret that I wanted to help bring my husband into the Church. So glad he had a different one in mind than I did back in 1974

I was introduced to the church by my friend that I went to football with. She never forced it on me but left me to go at my own pace. After us talking about the church for a year or so, she invited me round to her house to meet the missionaries. They gave me my first lesson that night and left me the book of Mormon to read. This I did and a few nights later, I felt the spirit and knew without a doubt that the book of Mormon was true. I was baptised two months later and have never looked back. I love going to the church, learning about the gospel and serving my brothers and sisters in the church. It was the best dicision I have ever made and I have no regrets whatsoever.

I was borned in the Gospel of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and I gained alots of experiences of the Gospel by doing our family Home Evening, Family Prayers, and also reading the Scriptures. As a member I have of the Church I have a strong testimony about Joseph Smith and his great work, Jesus Christ and his Sacrifice, our Havenly Father he loves us, and the Living Prophet is the mouthpiece of our Havenly Father to all the saints. So I know that this is the true Church on earth.

I started the lessons with the Missionaries in Mid 1966 and stopped for awhile after the second one. I was riding a motorcycle at the time and got lost in it for a couple of months. One day I was out riding and my brother who had introduced me to the church cought up with me and told me I needed to finish the discussions. I scheduled the next one. It was the word of wisdom. I was a smoker at the time and had tried to stop 3 or 4 times without success. When the Missionaries told me they could help I believed them and succeded. In October of 1966 I was Baptised and 3 months later met my wife to be. When I was able to quit smoking and give up my other bad habits so easily I new the truth was on the earth. I have been married to the same woman for 42 years and happy to be in this church. I know it is the one true church on the earth today.

I met my wife Barb, in 2004, I did not know she was a moron, or any of her family, after hanging out with her for a couple of month, Barb and her sister invited me out to Palmyra, and let me know they were mormon, I did not know anything about mormons, so this was an awesome opportunity for me to learn some of the history. We went to the Sacred Grove, the cottage where Joseph Smith was raised, I got to see the pageant and we than drove to Kurtland to see the temple. After we returned, the missionaries started coming around. Barb was prior married, and did not want the missionaries pushing me into a baptism that I did not want yet. It was almost another year before I was baptized, but I believe this was my turning point, I just did not want to let go of my coffee yet. On the day of my baptism, all members of my wife’s family, had all their home raided by police and all the computer seized, including all dvds, the police were looking for some kind of email communication, which nothing was ever found. But this was the moment I know the church was true as it said in

Ether 12: 6 dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.
