Scripture Study Tip

Wednesday November 12, 2008
In my Sunday School class this past Sunday I heard a really good scripture study technique to help you focus when studying the word of God. The tip was to read the scriptures out loud. By engaging yourself in the act of reading out loud you are are incorporating several aspects: the act of speaking, hearing your voice, and increasing your comprehension of what you are reading. I really like this tip and believe that using it, in addition to using other scripture study ideas, is a great way to study the LDS scriptures including the Bible.

What tips and scripture study techniques have worked for you?

(1) Sharon Cooper says:

When I wake up in the morning, there are so many things I want to do; i.e. get on the computer and play games, check my email, eBay account, pay bills, read my monthly book club selection, read the newest quilting magazine, get breakfast; but all of that can wait. I give the Lord my time FIRST by reading the scriptures and then I do whatever I want. My day seems to go better when I put my scriptures first.

I like the suggestion of reading the scriptures out loud, as this technique can dramatically increase our understanding. One help tip I use is to download the Book of Mormon in an audio format, transfer it to my iPod. I can then listen to the scriptures being read while I take my daily walk. It doesn’t replace the reading, but can enhance it.
