Real Life Use of Humanitarian Hygiene Kit
Friday January 26, 2007
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does a lot of humanitarian work, called LDS Philanthropies, but we often don't know how our service really helps others. I highly recommend reading this amazing article from the New Era called "Learning to Hope," (Nov. 2006, pg 10, also available in PDF format.) It's very short, only two pages.
This article is about a woman, Mariama Kallon, who lived in Sierra Leone during their civil war. Her story is one of the most shocking yet touching stories I've read in a long time. She shares some of the horrendous trials she lived through and how she received a hygiene kit and blanket from the LDS Church. Reading how this small service truly affected her has made me ponder how blessed we are and how we should give even more than we already do.

Thank you for pointing out this article. Hers is truly an amazing story. I will share it with my RS sisters as we work on the Humanitarian kits in the next few months.
You can generate donations for LDS Philanthropies just through using goodsearch for searches. Imagine what could happen if a hundred people did ten searches a day with LDS Philanthropies selected on goodsearch.
My friend in Utah told me about Mariama and I was so touched that I contacted her and asked her if she would come to Texas to speak at our Youth Conference.
We will be assembling hygiene kits right after her talk.
Mariama was very accomodating. She has given her life to God by accepting speaking requests and sacrificing her time, to the point of even missing work (and she’s not rich).
I’m so excited for our youth to hear from this lovely lady.
Thanks for recognizing her.

Thanks David for your comment. That is awesome that Mariama is coming to speak at your youth conference, what a great idea! Her story was amazing and heart wrenching. I’m glad to have given the article about her a spotlight on my site.
