We often think of family traditions during the Christmas season but what about Christmas Eve traditions? What specific activities does your family only do on Christmas Eve?

My Family's Traditions at Christmas

When it's almost the Christmas season we remind our parents that we need to go to the store and pick out our Christmas clothes. When Christmas day approaches we go to church in our new clothes and we don't take them off until its 12:00 at midnight. We eat chicken- a tradition here in Uganda in general. Everyone looks forward for when next Christmas is approaching. WE LOVE IT!

Our Australian Christmas Eve Traditions

I live in Australia with my 4 children. Christmas Eve my children and I drive around and look at all the Christmas lights in the area while we have Christmas carols playing on the car stereo. We then come home and have a simple dinner, normally of cold meats or seafood and salad.

Jerusalem Dinner

We have a "Jerusalem Dinner". We sit on the floor, have wooden dishes, and eat foods like fish, beef roast, bread in round loaves, butter, honey, olives (green & black), and dates - essentially those kinds of foods they might have eaten back then. (It's not entirely authentic - sometimes its fish sticks!) We eat by candlelight - we even have a couple of mideast-type oil lamps. We talk about what it was probably like in Jerusalem at that time. All in all, it's a lot of fun and the kids REALLY look forward to it. It's a very special time for us and it helps us keep our perspective about the purpose of Christmas.
