Singing Time: Magic Potion

By Rachel Bruner, About.com

The Magic Potions either turn a color of the rainbow or magically fizz! Use this singing time idea to practice one primary song or several different ones. This creative idea was submitted by two people, Jamie West and Cassie Lierley. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Items Needed:
  • 8 plastic cups (clear)
  • 8 plastic spoons (opaque/not clear is best)
  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • food coloring
  • cookie sheet
  • towel
  • water
  • colored paper: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple (construction paper works well)
Preparation:
  • Place the towel on the cookie sheet and then line up the cups on top.
  • Put water in 6 of them and vinegar in 2 of them, but only fill them 1/4 - 1/3 full. (To remember which is which just smell them!)
  • Line the spoons up in front of them.
  • Put one drop of food coloring (or one red and one blue drop to make purple) in the spoons that are in front of the waters.
  • Put in all of the spoons 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda or less.
  • Write each word (or group of words) for the practice song on different colored paper or use pictures for younger children.
Directions: (This is the fun part!) What you will be doing is matching the colored paper (words or pictures) with the color that appears in the water "magic potions." Tell the children whoever is being the most reverent, singing the best, etc. will be picked to come up and mix a magic potion. Let them pick any spoon and mix it in the cup that's next to it. If it turns a color remove all the words/pictures of that color and practice the song again. If the magic potion fizzes (the vinegar and baking soda) you can have the children sing the song in a different way (hum, whistle, while patting their heads, etc.) or you can have them choose their favorite song to sing.

Children LOVE the Magic Potions and rainbow colors that appear. They will sing their best with this fun singing time idea!

Notes:
  1. I strongly recommend testing the amount of vinegar to baking soda to make sure it wont over flow the size of your cup.
  2. Personally I think it's more fun if all the magic potions fizz and have color because it makes the bubbles turn the color too.
  3. To make this idea run shorter use less cups, or to go longer add more cups of vinegar.
  4. To practice different songs write the name or page number on the back of the colored paper and when a potion is mixed with that color practice that song.
  5. This singing time idea can be easily adapted to work for all different types of things as well!
