Our Gender is Eternal
God, the Eternal Father, created each of us-male and female-in His image (Genesis 1:27). We are each a son or daughter of heavenly parents; God is the father of our spirits, and we are His children. The Family: A Proclamation to the World states:
"Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose" (paragraph 2).When we lived as spirits with our Heavenly Father in the pre-existence we were the same gender as we are now, and will continue to remain so after we die. Our gender, male or female, is a divine characteristic that is a part of our eternal identity.
The Powers of Procreation are Sacred
When Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden the first commandment God gave them was to "multiply and replenish the earth" (Genesis 1:28). The power to procreate is sacred and sexual interactions should only be between a husband and wife who are legally married.1
Marriage and the rearing of children is part of God's plan for eternal families. Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said:
"Attraction between man and woman was instilled by the Creator to ensure the perpetuation of mortal life and to draw husband and wife together in the family setting he prescribed for the accomplishment of his purposes, including the raising of children. In contrast, deviations from God's commandments in the use of procreative powers are grave sins. President Joseph F. Smith taught:Homosexuality and Lesbianism is a Sin
"'Sexual union is lawful in wedlock, and if participated in with right intent is honorable and sanctifying. But without the bonds of marriage, sexual indulgence is a debasing sin, abominable in the sight of Deity.'"2
Homosexual or lesbian behavior is a serious sexual sin as it violates God's law of chastity. In the Bible God commanded, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" (Leviticus 18:22 also see Leviticus 20:13). Those who participate in homosexual activities, including gay marriage, are committing sexual sins.
In Putting on the Armor of God: How to Win Your Battles With Satan the author, Steven A. Cramer, quotes Boyd K. Packer regarding the seriousness of the sin of homosexuality:
"It is wrong! It is unnatural; it is abnormal; it is an affliction. When practiced, it is immoral. It is a transgression. There appears to be a consensus in the world that it is natural, to one degree or another, for a percentage of the population. Therefore, we must accept it as all right. Do not be misled by those who whisper that it is part of your nature and therefore right for you. That is false doctrine!"3Homosexual and lesbian thoughts and feelings should be resisted as our thoughts and feelings can lead us to act upon them. Satan would have us believe that homosexual and lesbian relations are not a sin, but they are, and can lead a person into the destructive cycle of addiction. Breaking God's law of chastity through the sin of homosexual and lesbian behavior causes a person to become spiritually dead.
Only through repentance and the Atonement of Jesus Christ can a person be saved from the spiritual death of the sexual sins of homosexuality and lesbianism.
