Inside the Pearl of Great Price
The Pearl of Great Price contains the following:
- Selections from the Book of Moses
- Book of Abraham (with three facsimiles)
- Joseph Smith—Matthew
- Joseph Smith—History
- The Articles of Faith
The Book of Abraham is a divine translation of ancient papyrus scrolls (from Egyptian catacombs) that came into Joseph Smith's possession. This record contains the actual writings of Abraham while he was in Egypt, which he wrote by his own hand, upon the papyrus. The papyrus contained three amazing hieroglyphics (pictures) called facsimiles 1, 2, & 3.
Joseph Smith-History is Joseph Smith's personal account and testimony of his search for truth and the First Vision- when he saw God the Father and Jesus Christ.
The Articles of Faith, written by Joseph Smith, are a summary of our basic beliefs. Many of these beliefs, such as faith in Christ, repentance, baptism by immersion, and the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost are found within the other sections of the Pearl of Great Price.
The books of Moses and Abraham, writings by these ancient prophets, contain beautiful scriptures about God's plan of salvation including the creation, fall of Adam and Eve, and mankind's eternal need for a Savior- Jesus Christ.
Why a "Pearl of Great Price?"
The phrase, "pearl of great price" is found in the New Testament in Matthew 13:45-46:
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:The Pearl of Great Price is a pearl because of the spiritual treasures it contains. The truths found within these scriptures are of such great value that one who wanted such treasures would "sell" all that he has to "own" them.
