Family Home Evening Game: Categories

By , About.com Guide

Object of the Game: Finish with the most points.

Items Needed: Paper and pencil for each person. A timer or watch (optional).

Preparation: Make or print (see PDF file below) a board. To make your own draw a grid for each person, you will need a row for each category (including a top row for the letter) and a column (including one to list the categories) for each round you wish to play. Write categories in the left-hand column, and letters of the alphabet in the top row. For example if you wish to play three rounds and have five categories you will need a chart of four columns and six rows.

PDF File: LDS Categories (This one page file comes with two identical boards with 12 LDS categories. Randomly pick a common letter of the alphabet for each round.)

Directions: Set a timer for 3 or 4 minutes. Figure out category items that begin with each letter. For example, let's say the first category is animals and the first letter is B, you can put bear, bobcat, boa constrictor, etc. in the box. When time's up, have each person share their items. If two or more people have the same item(s) they must each cross it off. Get one point per unique item. Total your points to see who's the winner!

Example: The first category is animals and the first letter is A, you can list aardvark, alligator, anteater, etc. Player one chooses alligator and so does player three, both players must cross it off. Player two chose aardvark so they get one point.

Note: To make the game more difficult for older children you can make categories more specific such as mammals, reptiles, birds, etc.
