Happiness is a ChoiceIn The Book of Mormon we learn that God, our Father, wants us to be happy:
"Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy" (2 Nephi 2:25).Adam and Eve partook of the fruit and fell- they became mortal- then they had children. God taught Adam and Even His plan of happiness and they taught their children God's plan.
But how can we be happy? The key word in the scripture above is "might" which implies a choice. Being happy and having joy, or being miserable and unhappy, is a personal choice that each of us makes, no one else can make us happy. We choose how we react to all that happens in our lives and we choose our attitude.
Wickedness Never Was HappinessThe choices we make also affect our happiness and joy. When we sin we are not happy. We may experience a temporary happiness but it never lasts, it is a false counterfeit of true joy.
Alma, a Book of Mormon prophet taught his son this truth:
"Do not suppose, because it has been spoken concerning restoration, that ye shall be restored from sin to happiness. Behold, I say unto you, wickedness never was happiness. How can we be happy when living in sin? We cannot.
"And now, my son, all men that are in... a carnal state, are in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity; they are without God in the world, and they have gone contrary to the nature of God; therefore, they are in a state contrary to the nature of happiness" (Alma 41:10).
Repentance Brings HappinessIt is impossible to be happy and have true joy when living in sin but because God loves us and wants us to be happy He provided a Savior- Jesus Christ. Jesus suffered for all our sins through His atoning sacrifice. Through Christ's atonement we can become clean from our sins, all we have to do is have faith in Jesus Christ and repent.
To be happy we must repent every day, because each of us sins every day. To begin down the path that leads to happiness you can start by following these steps of repentance.
Happiness Comes From Faith in ChristFaith in Jesus Christ goes hand-in-hand with repentance and is necessary to have true happiness. Doubt, fear, and a lack of faith bring unhappiness.
For example: imagine that death is the end and that there is no life after you die. Once you're dead you cease to exist and so does your family and friends. Does that fill you with happiness or sorrow?
Now image living again after this life. You're with your family and friends in a wonderful world full of life and happiness. There is no longer death, sorrow, or evil. Does this fill you with happiness or sorrow? Having faith in Christ means believing in God's plan of happiness and that there is life after we die.
Wear the Armor of GodSatan will try to stop us from being happy. Because Satan rejected God and became miserable forever he will do everything he can to get us to reject God as well and become as miserable as he is.
"Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and... they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself" (2 Nephi 2:27).To protect ourselves from Satan's attacks we must put on the armor of God. We are in a war and Satan is the enemy that is trying to destroy us. We can either choose Satan's side of misery, or God's side which is the only way to be happy.
Self-Reliance Leads to HappinessBeing self-reliant means that we take responsibility for our own needs and that of our family. This includes our physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, financial, and social needs. We cannot be happy when we are completely dependent upon someone or something else to take care of us.
Although we need to be dependent upon God, it does not mean that we are not responsible to take care of ourselves. We have an obligation to provide for our own needs which God will hold us accountable for. As we increase our self-reliance we will feel joy because self-reliance leads to happiness.
Happiness Through Creativty and CharityPresident Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency taught that we are compassionate creators of a compassionate and creative being. Creating something new brings us joy and happiness, which makes sense when we realize that God is the Creator of all things. He creates beautiful and amazing things. We are His children and also have the ability to create beautiful and amazing things.
Don't let Satan make you believe that you aren't creative. Everyone is creative, even if you don't realize it yet. We each have talents and skills that we can develop which bring us joy as we do so.
The other truth to finding joy is to have charity, the pure love of Christ, for our brothers and sisters. As we serve one another we feel joy and are happy.
Happiness Through HumilityOne of the most important attributes that leads to happiness is that of humility. Pride, anger, and self-will do not bring us happiness. To be truly happy we must be humble, meek, and teachable. As we put our trust in the Lord, keep His commandments, and accept His will we will find our lives full of eternal joy and happiness.
It's not always easy to be humble, especially when we've been hurt, but here are some resources on how to have humility which will help us to be happy.
I know these simple truths are from God and that if you apply them in your life you will be happy.
