Cultural Event

By Rachel Woods, About.com

A fun LDS activity idea is to hold a cultural event! As our Ward's Activity Committee Chairperson one of the activities we held was a cultural event. Here are some of the things we had:

Display Tables
These were setup for people to share items from other cultures/countries (such as clothing, dishes, pictures, crafts, etc.)

FOOD (of course!)
We invited people to bring a dessert or an appetizer for "taste testing" this way they wouldn't have to come up with a large "meal" for everyone, just a little taste so everyone can sample something from another culture.

Performances
Such as dances, songs, poetry, and story readings which could be in any language. We asked that each performance be kept under three minutes.

Decorations
Most of the decorations were the actual display tables but we also supplemented with some flags and cultural table clothes (disposable) for each table.

Note: Cultural food was actually served from that country's display table. Example: Food from Mexico was at the table with the decorations and display items from Mexico. This way those who brought the food and items on display could answer any questions people might have. People were not required to stay at their tables though. We also encouraged people to mingle by NOT setting up tables/chairs for sitting. We did have chairs facing the stage for the performance part of the activity to help promote respect of those who shared their talents with us.
