The Pocket Library

Guide Rating -   4 Stars

If you're tired of carrying around all those books and want to consolidate your gospel library then you need to take a look at the latest release from LDSLiving titled, The Pocket Library. The Pocket Library consists of over 31 LDS titles and volumes including:

  • The Standard Works
  • Answers to Gospel Questions
  • Articles of Faith
  • Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith
  • House of the Lord
  • LDS Hymns
  • Discourses of Brigham Young
  • And more

If you were to total all of the books, you would easily have to spend hundreds of dollars maybe even a thousand.

The Pocket Library works with most PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants). The requirements to use this software are merely that your PDA must use the operating system Palm 3.0 or greater or Windows CE 2.01 or greater. As long as your PDA meets these requirements you will be able to load the reader and many of the titles that come with the library.

The only limits to using The Pocket Library depend upon the memory that your PDA has. I have a Palm IIIx with 4 MB of RAM. Having this will only allow me to load about 10 different titles at any given time. For instance, I could load the entire Standard Works and then have enough room left for about 4 or 5 more books depending on their size. Plenty of reading for that next long trip.

The reader software that comes with The Pocket Library is the standard reader you use on most PDAs. If you already have a reader installed, you are not required to load the reader that comes with the Library. They merely have it available for you in case you do not have one.

The instructions that come with The Pocket Library are not step by step on how to load the books, instead they assume that you already know how to use your PDA. My only complaint about the package is that there is no index of titles or index of what books correspond with which files on the CD. However, after a couple of syncs you'll find out quickly which book you have downloaded. For instance you'll find a file called gd.pdb in the titles directory. After you install it and sync with your PDA you'll find that it is the book titled Gospel Doctrine. When you want to install a different book you need to make sure that you have enough room on your PDA. If you do not have enough room then you need to delete one of the books to make room. After you have made room then you can install another book. As long as you have the CD you'll be able go through this process as many times as you want.

When using these books you'll find that they are just like using any other book for the PDA. Each has a table of contents that allows you to scroll through quickly and then choose a chapter to start reading. When reading the scriptures you have books within books which are then divided into chapters. This allows you to find within the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi Chapter 4 Verse 1 in a few taps. In addition you have the ability to search using keywords. You can search the entire book or just from the point you are reading from. You also have the ability to bookmark your place, read other information from another book you have loaded, and then return to your bookmark. You also have the ability to copy and paste information into a memo.

The Pocket Library is affordable and truly worth it for those that are casual PDA users and those that want to become more involved with their PDA. This will give you more of a reason to carry it with you to meetings and carry fewer books.
