One of the things
which makes the LDS Church unique is its belief in ongoing revelation.
We often thank the Lord for a living prophet. But how often do we actually
read what our current prophet says? How familiar are you with what Gordon
B. Hinckley has actually said on gospel subjects? Even if you read the
Ensign on a regular basis, you're liable to miss out on talks or discussions
which happen outside of General Conference.
If you really want to
be informed on what the prophet has to say, on any matter, you'd do well
to pick up a copy of this book. It's not the kind of book you'll sit down
and read from cover to cover, but it is a book you'll find yourself reaching
for time and time again. It's a huge compendium of quotes and is arranged
topically for ease of use.
The collection of quotes
is amazingly complete. You'd be hard pressed NOT to find a quote which
relates to any talk or lesson you might give. Not only has are there lots
of quotes on doctrine—as you might expect—but also many pages on various
topics relating to Church History. For example, the book includes Hinckley's
commentary on every single Latter-Day Prophet from Joseph Smith to Howard
W. Hunter.
The amount of material
included depends on topic. "Abortion" only gets three lines; whereas "Church
Government" has thirty-one pages of material. Larger topics, such as priesthood
or prophets, are divided into sub-topics for your convenience. Most topics
consist of one to five pages of material.
Sources for the material
in the book are varied. In addition to the Ensign, there are quotes from
firesides, regional conferences, missionary meetings, BYU devotionals,
and even press conferences.
A side note:
Purists might want to note that many of the quotes predate his ordination
as President of the Church. However, all of the quotes were given when
he was at least an apostle—and therefore ordained as one of the "prophets,
seers and revelators" who guide the church.
