Lund seems to have done a good job researching this book. At the end of every chapter, there are some notes detailing historical sources for the material. The Bible is the main source, of course, with Josephus and other historians close behind. Some everyday occurrences are based on Talmudic tradition (although the Talmud was not compiled until much later.) As with all historical fiction, some of the details are based on pure speculation, and Lund is sure to tell the reader when this is the case. The story itself is very intriguing; I found it hard to put the book down. (Unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to read a book of this length in one sitting.) The people in the story are equally engaging. It is interesting to watch as the characters interact with Jesus; two can see the same event or hear the same words, and yet come away from the experience with completely different impressions. Some eagerly embrace the Master's teachings; some actively fight against Him; others just become confused. And yet, despite the differences of personality, all of the characters remain very believable. What would it be like to live in the time of Jesus? What would it be like to hear the words of our Lord, to see his miracles performed? And how would your life be changed as a result? If you read this book, you'll have a pretty good idea. I highly recommend this excellent book. Needless to say, I'm eagerly awaiting the next volume in the series. |
