LDS Primary - Going the Extra Mile
A great way to help children learn the value of charity and service.

By Rachel Bruner, About.com

Preparation: Print several of the clipart images below or make your own.

Directions: A week or two before handing out the medals explain to the children that to earn a medal they must go the extra mile. Discuss with them what it means to go the extra mile and how they can apply it in their lives. For example: Doing a chore of their brother or sister without being asked, doing the dishes for their mom without being asked, making friends with a lonely classmate, etc.

Clipart and New Era Posters:Note: When doing this in our primary we had trouble with the children always doing the same things over and over. It is more touching to have a family member of the child tell what they have seen the person doing and thus rewarding them with the praise from someone else and not from themselves. This also works great when giving a lesson on service.
