Our local missionaries came over for dinner last night, which gave us a great opportunity to serve those who are serving others. I enjoy having the missionaries over, as it reminds me of my own mission and the need to share the truth with others.

One great idea my husband's aunt and uncle gave us was to make a hot breakfast for dinner for the missionaries. Since missionaries usually have dinner appointments, and on average probably only eat cold cereal for breakfast, we thought this was a great idea. When talking with the missionaries I offered them a few choices of meals I could make, one of which was a hot breakfast, which is what they both wanted. So last night my husband and I made scrambled eggs, bacon, orange juice, and waffles. We had several toppings to choose from, including our family's special buttermilk syrup (a type of caramel syrup). It was very enjoyable having our missionaries over for dinner, and I especially liked the spiritual message they shared afterwards.

When was the last time you served your missionaries by feeding them? If it's been awhile, consider feeding your missionaries this week. You don't have to wait to be asked to feed the missionaries- take the initiative today and invite them over.

If you're not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints you can still offer a meal to a pair of missionaries. If you have the missionaries over they usually share a spiritual message and will invite you to do something good, such as learn more about the gospel of Jesus Christ, worship with us at Church, or attend a church activity.

I’m the non-Mormon mother of a Mormon son & daughter-in-law, and grandmother to five Mormon grandchildren. I’ve never invited missionaries to share a meal in my home, but I have fed them when they came to my home with my kids. But one thing I enjoy doing is to hand them a gift of cash when I see them out in public. Or hang around when they get to the check-out in the grocery store and at the last second I surprise them by paying their grocery bill. The surprise and joy on their face is blessing enough for me.
Doing it this way, they always get to choose the brands and types of purchases they want.

As a mother of one returned missionary and two serving currently, thank you for however you help any missionary. They all love serving others, but it’s just as important for them to receive service also. It’s one of the most difficult things to have your child away from home, but knowing that others and taking care of them in their own way, helps so much. Even accepting their help, gives them satisfaction also. This is their purpose to serve others in any way they can. Thank you for watching over our children while they’re away from home.

arkgranny: Thank you for sharing your service ideas, what a great way to help the missionaries. You’re a great example of caring for others even though you are not a baptized member of our church. Thank you!

Thanks Michelle for your comment. It’s wonderful to help the missionaries any way we can. One of my brothers and I were both out on a mission at the same time for a year. Since my children aren’t old enough to serve full-time missions yet I haven’t gone through the actual experience of having a child be away from home on a mission, but I know that experience will come and I will be deeply grateful for all those who help take care of the missionaries. It’s such a glorious thing when people in the world do such good things by helping others!
