President Thomas S. Monson, sixteenth prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave an amazing talk this past General Conference about gratitude and how it is a divine principle. President Monson quoted the following scripture:
"Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things...Our beloved prophet went on to teach about this marvelous principle of gratitude. He said:
"And in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things."1
"Regardless of our circumstances, each of us has much for which to be grateful if we will but pause and contemplate our blessings....President Monson said many wonderful things about gratitude and quoted some great passages. One of the things he also said was:
"We can lift ourselves and others as well when we refuse to remain in the realm of negative thought and cultivate within our hearts an attitude of gratitude. If ingratitude be numbered among the serious sins, then gratitude takes its place among the noblest of virtues."2
"A grateful heart, then, comes through expressing gratitude to our Heavenly Father for His blessings and to those around us for all that they bring into our lives. This requires conscious effort--at least until we have truly learned and cultivated an attitude of gratitude. Often we feel grateful and intend to express our thanks but forget to do so or just don't get around to it."3I am grateful for many, many things! I know that all that I am and all that I have received is from God and that He is my Father. I know that Jesus is my Savior and loves me. I am grateful to know these things and for all that I have been given- even the trials and hardships of my life. May we recognize all that God has blessed us with and develop an attitude of gratitude by giving Him thanks in all things.
