Update: The Church created an excellent short video based off this marvelous talk.
When my husband came home from the priesthood session of April's General Conference, he told me that President Dieter F. Uchtdorf gave an excellent talk, one that I needed to hear, because it was on patience. My husband is very loving and he said this in his sweet, teasing way that I love, which is NOT hurtful or mean. My husband is also an extremely patient person- one of the reasons I married him- while I, on the other hand, am not.
My reaction was typical, and I think I may have snorted in reply, but I definitely wasn't eager to rush out and read President Uchtdorf's talk. However, I teach the fourth Sunday in Relief Society, Teachings For Our Times, which lessons come from the most recent General Conference talks, and I knew I was probably going to end up teaching the one on patience. Sure enough, the first lesson I was assigned was, "Continue in Patience," which I will be teaching next Sunday on the 23rd.
So I read through the talk, which of course is excellent, but it wasn't until a few days later when I was reading through it again that the power in President Uchtdorf's words hit me. I've been going through some challenge (as we all do) and had been earnestly praying for help and direction, when- surprise!- the answers were right there in this article on patience.
I now love this talk! I have read it several times, have written down parts of it, and even went online and listened to President Uchtdorf when he originally gave it. The passage on patience that spoke to me the most was the following:
What tips and resource have helped you in developing patience, including having patience in trials?

Patience is "far more than simply waiting for something to happen--patience require[s] actively working toward worthwhile goals and not getting discouraged when results [don't] appear instantly or without effort.Wow, what an amazing quote! This was exactly what I needed. President Uchtdorf's talk is full of gems. Here are some of my favorites:
"There is an important concept here: patience is not passive resignation, nor is it failing to act because of our fears. Patience means active waiting and enduring. It means staying with something and doing all that we can--working, hoping, and exercising faith; bearing hardship with fortitude, even when the desires of our hearts are delayed. Patience is not simply enduring; it is enduring well!" (Ensign, May 2010, 56-59).
- "Patience is a purifying process."
- "Patience- the ability to put our desires on hold for a time- is a precious and rare virtue."
- "Never give up on anyone. And that includes not giving up on yourself."
- "Knowledge and understanding come at the price of patience."
- "Patience is a process of perfection."

Hi There, I am actually teaching Relief Society this Sunday from this talk, and was wondering if you would help me since you have already taught it. I am quite nervous to teach, (I am just filling in for someone), and I am having ahard time turning it into a lesson, that can have discussion. If you could email me I’d be so grateful.
