Depriving yourself of much-needed nutrients in a desire to have a “spiritual” experience is stupid.
Oh, it’s dumber than that, Roger. Latter-day Saints refrain from even drinking water during a fast. Water.
I remember reading about how B. F. Skinner had pigeons in his famous ‘Skinner boxes’, and they’d get a pellet of food if they pushed a lever. But other pigeons were fed randomly, and these pigeons were observed to engage in some pretty weird behaviours, trying to figure out what they could do to make the food come out. What you got was essentially superstitious pigeons.
Mormons are like those pigeons, thinking “What can I do to make this God person give me what I want?” You’d think they’d question the kindness of an omniscient god that knows what you want but makes you starve yourself before he’ll help you. But no.
