How to Use Your Patriarchal Blessing

Wednesday October 22, 2008
A few weeks ago I attended a wonderful class about patriarchal blessings, by Carleen Tanner. She taught how a patriarchal blessing is our own personal scriptures from the Lord and is a priceless tool that we should not hide away and never use. Sister Tanner gave some excellent tips on how to use our blessing, which I found very helpful.
  1. Make a copy of your patriarchal blessing
  2. Get three colored pens/pencils for marking
  3. Underline any words or phrases using the following key:
    • Color 1: Counsel and Warnings
    • Color 2: Descriptions about You
    • Color 3: Your Gifts and Talents
  4. On a separate piece of paper make a list for each color group of all the words/phrases you underlined
  5. Look up the words in the scriptures to understand how the Lord uses them
  6. Use the list of warnings to create goals to do what you've been counseled
  7. Put your lists and goals in your scriptures
  8. Read them every night and then "return and report" to the Lord in prayer at the end of your day
As you do this, two things will happen:
  1. You will come to know how much the Lord loves you.
  2. You will know where to go for help, and what to do each day.
Our Father loves us. He wants us to have joy and to be saved from our sins. To help us have joy and be saved He has given us the individual guidance we need through our patriarchal blessing. As we turn to the Lord, humble ourselves, and ask for His help we will be greatly blessed.

News Announcement: A notice was posted in the LDS Community Forum that patriarchal blessings will soon be available online from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

(2) Rachel Woods, About.com Latter-day Saint Guide says:

A Patriarchal Blessing as explained in this FAQ about patriarchal blessings is a blessing given to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by a patriarch. The patriarch, who is called of God, places his hands on the person’s head and gives them a blessing which will include a person’s lineage in the House of Israel as well as counsel, guidance, warnings, and other personal information.

You can find additional information from the Topic Definition of Patriarchal Blessings from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

(3) Cindy Pulley says:

A Patriarchal Blessing is a sacred personal blessing given to you from the Stake Partriarch through the Spirit from the Heavenly Father. Heavenly Father knows you. The blessing takes about yourself and wonderful blessings in store for your life. He will give you talents and gifts that you may not even know that you had. Heavenly Father will give you counsel and what kind of direction that you need to take in your own personal life. If you would like to obtain a partarichal blessing, you need to feel worthy of it. You may ask your Bishop for some help in obtaining a Patarichal blessing. You interview with the Bishop and see your
Stake Patarich. If you do get a Patriarchal Blessing, the blessing is not meant to be shared with any one. Its very sacred and personal only to you. Its like going into the Temple to perform sacred work there.
