The Mormons: A Documentary
Sunday April 1, 2007
PBS aired a two part, two hour documentary about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called "The Mormons" on April 30 and May 1, 2007, from 9:00-11:00 p.m. ET. This documentary was created by two of PBS' acclaimed series: American Experience and Frontline. The film's maker, Helen Whitney, who is not a member of the LDS Church, was granted special access to archives, leaders, and other histories both in and out of the LDS Church.

Besides the Topic of the just completed Renovation of the Temple Square Tabernacle this past weekend Spring General conference, the LDS Church focused on them being Christians…. This is like a Mule calming to be is a horse.

Oh Brent,,,that just shows how little you actually know. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,,,,that about says it all,,,doesn’t it?
regarding “The Mormons” on PBS…I had read that Helen Whitney WAS a member of the LDS Church. The piece I read on it was very favorable to Latter-day Saints.
I am excited about this show. I watched an interview with Helen Whitney after conference and I think it is going to be interesting to see how they did this.If it will be an accurate account or not.
Brent , I just would like to say that it is not about labels or symbols but how we live and our relationship with Christ. The love we feel for him. How we live out daily lives to show the love and respect we have for him.It never bothers me when some one says that I am a “Mule” I know what I am and I know that he knows who and what I am, and that is all that counts to me.
PBS has done some other great shows on the LDS church Sacred Stone _about the Navuoo Temple and An American Prophet -about Joseph Smith Jr. I have seen the American Prophet dvd at Barnes and Noble maybe your local stations will replay the other when this one comes out.
I’m always amazed when I read comments like Brents. Nancy is right, it shows how little you really know about the Church. You ought to download and read the talks given at the recent General Conference and determine for yourself if Christianity is taught. As was pointed out, everything from the name of the church to its teachings on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ testify that the Church and its members are Christian. I am dumbfounded how anybody with a little bit of logic, common sense, and faith can cliam that The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-day Saints is not Christian. Investigate it for yourself. In my book, being Christian means you believe in Jesus Christ, you testifiy of Christ, you try to live a Christ-like live, you believe He lived, He atoned for all mankind, he resurrected, and that he will someday return to earth known as the Second Coming. Mormons learn of Jesus Christ by studying the Bible and also the Book of Mormon which is another testiment of Jesus Christ and of his live. Anyone desiring to make a concerted effort to study about the Church and listen to its gospel message will learn your themselves that Mormons are Christian. In fact, why don’t you find out where the word Mormon came from? You’ll learn that Mormon was an ancient prophet whos testimony and teachings are recorded in the Book of Mormon. The ancient prophet Mormon testified of Jesus Christ. Simply walk into any Mormon church service throughout the world on any given Sunday and see for yourself how mormons teach of Christ.
Whew, I just had to get that out.
I am going to see it. It could be really good.
Michel,
I am truly sorry about your sister, but weather where mormon or what ever religeon we are some people are bad dont blame the church for that. You have to come to church and check it out I myself have had bad things happen to me but its not the churches fault it the person that did the crime. It sounds like the boys did not learn anything in church, to act like that. And futher more we do not beleve in more than one wife, there was a reason for that at the time. I know people still do it but the church is highly against it. God died for our sins, and we have a chose weather we want to go to heaven or not, if we follow the comandments and read the scriptures, and learn to be kind to each other and Jesus did,we also need to forgive everyone, not just mormons or cathlics or born agains what ever the religeon is, Christ is the head of the Church, So than we are all Christians if we not just believe in Jesus but we also have to follow his lifestyle, Not everyone will get to heaven, than has nothing to do with Mormons, its in the Holy bible, Before you go blaming the mormons for sins, you also need to be honest with yourself, You mention Jesus forgiving Mary Magdalene, for what she did, but there was no one else that could blame her because they where not without sin, and neather are you. We have a chose how we want to live, but it also comes with consaquences. Please read more about us and forgive those who hurt you that is the teaching of Christ. Its like reading and artical, you can tell what its all about by the title, you need to read it all get it.

I am a reporter for Brigham Young University’s newspaper, the Daily Universe. I have been covering this and have talked to Helen Whitney. She’s never been a member, but ever since the 1980s has been interested in faith and what drives people closer to God or away from him. The link above is my story about the documentary and was published in the school paper on Wed. April 18. I also have a editorial about what I have seen because PBS let me pre-screen the whole thing as a member of the media.

Just finished the second half of the documentary. This is probably the best the Church has ever looked in a film. It is critical, but one comes away with a feeling that the rest of the nation will actually be able to understand us finally.
Here is the link to the first article, the link on my first comment is to my editorial.

Thanks Nick for sharing your articles, they’re very informative! I wrote up a blog entry about them here:

I have never understood why people want to tear down someone elses faith. The mistatements, rumors, fables, and some down right amusing things said about the church are remarkable. Some defy sanity, such as we fly aroung in the temple. As someone said amazing but confusing.
does anyone know if pbs is posting this online?
I enjoyed the programs which I saw in mid February of 2008. It taught me a lot about the Church It wasn’t perfect but what documentary is? I think they tried to be fair.
