I think that if we truly have faith in the Lord, we will not fear where our next meal comes from and trust that He will always provide us with what we need. I think that there are way too many hungry people out there to save up such a rediculous amount od food. Sooo many people could have a decsent nights sleep on a full stomach. Give to live.
Allison, I do understand what you are saying. If Mormons really care, then why hoard such massive amounts of food?
The answer is simple. The LDS church maintains what are called Bishop’s Storehouses. These Storehouses act a lot like your normal food pantry to help out people in need but they are also a little more like supermarkets in some ways than a mere food bank. You have a “shopping list” and weigh out the amount of fruit and vegetables. You can be provided with various meats, dairy, fresh produce, seasonings, pasta and potatos, et cetera. All pof this is made possible by members of the LDS church through their fast offerings and volunteering. This resource is also not limited to just Mormons; it helps the community!
At the same time, many Mormons do stock up and save some of the necessities. This is actually a good thing. It can delay the time before someone may have to go on public assistance, for example. As items are rotated and replaced, some of these items may be given to needy neighbors to help out; it isn’t just a matter of hoarding.
